Can you bring a fan on a cruise?

It depends on your cruise line. Carnival, Norwegian, Princess, Celebrity, Disney, Holland America and Virgin Voyages allow it with limits. Royal Caribbean and MSC ban it.

Most lines allow a small fan

Seven lines allow fans with limits: Carnival, Norwegian, Princess, Celebrity, Disney, Holland America and Virgin. Royal Caribbean and MSC don't name fans, but their general rules on electrical items leave them out, so we show those two as not allowed.

The limits, line by line

Carnival allows fans up to 12 inches across. Norwegian allows only small electric or battery fans and may hold one for a check. Celebrity wants a certified low-wattage fan but doesn't give a number. Holland America allows a small fan without a surge protector, used with care.

Three lines inspect plug-in fans. Princess has its electrical team check fans without surge protectors, and still asks guests not to bring one if they can avoid it. Disney's Chief Electrical Engineer inspects fans and returns them only if approved. Virgin says a plug-in fan may need an electrician's check, so tell the terminal team at check-in if one is in your carry-on.

Battery or plug-in?

A small battery or USB-powered fan is the easiest choice on lines that allow fans. Norwegian and Virgin both name battery fans, and a battery fan skips the outlet questions that come with plug-in models.

On Royal Caribbean, ask the line if you need a fan for a medical reason.

Questions people ask
