No line we cover allows them

Six lines name steamers on their banned lists: Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Celebrity, Disney and MSC. Celebrity even spells out travel steamers, so a small one doesn't get a pass.

Princess, Holland America and Virgin don't use the word. Each of them bans appliances with a heating element, and a steamer heats water to make steam. That puts it under the same ban, which is why we mark those three as a general rule.

Why hair tools are fine but steamers aren't

Cruise lines ban appliances that heat up in your cabin, then carve out a short list of exceptions. Virgin is the clearest example: it bans any appliance with a heating element, except hair dryers, curling irons and straighteners. MSC lists hair straighteners and hair irons as exceptions too.

Steamers and clothing irons never make those exception lists. MSC says outright that steamers give off heat and are a fire risk.

What happens if security finds one

Your bags go through a scanner, and a steamer is easy to spot. Carnival says items it removes are thrown away with no refund. Princess says banned items found in bags are taken and discarded. Holland America holds electrical items it sees as a hazard and gives them back on the last day.

Either way, you won't have it during the cruise. Disney adds that items found in screening can delay your bags until late on boarding day.

Getting wrinkles out on board

Several lines point you to their own services. Celebrity and Holland America send you to the ship's laundry and pressing service. Disney's ships have self-service laundry rooms with irons and ironing boards you can use.

For light creases, hang clothes in the bathroom while you take a hot shower, or use a wrinkle-release spray. Packing tips help too: roll knit clothes, and hang dressy outfits as soon as you get to your cabin.

What to pack instead

Questions people ask

Why are steamers banned on cruises?

They heat water with an electric element, and cruise lines ban appliances with heating elements in cabins. MSC calls steamers a fire hazard.

Is a small travel or handheld steamer OK?

No. Size doesn't change the rule. Celebrity bans travel steamers by name, and the other lines ban the heating element itself.

What happens if I pack one anyway?

Security will likely find it in the scan. Depending on the line, it may be held until the end of the cruise or thrown away, so you'll carry it for nothing.

Can I use an iron on the ship instead?

On Disney, yes: its ships have self-service laundry rooms with irons and ironing boards. Celebrity and Holland America offer laundry and pressing services instead. Check what your ship has.

Is wrinkle-release spray allowed?

It isn't on any banned list we read. A pump bottle avoids any question about aerosol cans, which some lines limit to personal-care products.
