You may not need to pack one

Most cabins already have a hair dryer. Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Celebrity, MSC, Holland America and Virgin all say so. Disney's prohibited items list says each stateroom has a hand-held dryer too.

If you like your own dryer, most lines allow it. Carnival, Celebrity, MSC and Virgin allow hair dryers with no extra conditions.

Lines with conditions

Disney caps wattage: 1500 watts at 110V or 2000 watts at 220V. On the Disney Adventure, the cap is 2000 watts at 230V. Check the label on your dryer before you pack it.

Royal Caribbean's pages disagree. Its prohibited items page says a dryer may be refused depending on its specs, while its Guest Conduct Policy says hair dryers are allowed. We show the stricter rule. Norwegian allows dryers used with care and says some high-wattage models need a converter.

Lines that don't say

Princess's pages don't mention hair dryers. Holland America says every cabin has one but doesn't say whether you can bring your own. Ask either line before you pack a dryer.
