Can you bring a service dog on a cruise?
Yes, on all 9 lines, but most have rules about it.
Pick your cruise line
Only trained service dogs can sail. Emotional support dogs and dogs in training can't. The dog must be at least 6 months old, microchipped and up to date on shots, including rabies. For U.S. sailings, email your vaccine records and CDC Dog Import Form receipt at least one week before you sail. Some ports need extra permits.

Papers the dog needs
Every port has its own entry rules for animals, and you're usually the one who has to get those papers. Royal Caribbean and Celebrity both ask you to leave a copy at Guest Relations when you board. Disney asks for copies of each port's import permits.
Some lines list their own requirements. Carnival and MSC want the dog at least 6 months old and microchipped. Carnival also wants vaccine records, including rabies, and a CDC Dog Import Form receipt for U.S. sailings. Norwegian asks for a USDA or international health certificate. MSC wants a vet's health certificate.
Rules on board
Plan on keeping the dog leashed in public areas and never leaving it alone in the cabin. Disney, Holland America and Virgin say you can't leave the animal alone in your stateroom. Celebrity, Disney, MSC and Virgin keep dogs out of pools and spas.
Bring the dog's food. Princess and Virgin say so directly, and Celebrity can hold dog food in a fridge if you ask ahead.
Relief areas
Several lines set up a relief area on deck. Celebrity uses 4 by 4 foot mulch boxes. MSC has a mulch relief area, Virgin has a relief station on Deck 7, and Princess uses an outside deck. Ask for one when you book.
Some ports won't let dogs ashore
Norwegian names Jamaica as a port that doesn't let service dogs ashore. Princess, Holland America and Carnival also warn that some ports have strict rules or need extra permits. Check every port on your trip, not just the first one.
